High school AU open post

"Think we're both normal-sized. Just on different ends of the spectrum. Don't worry, it's adorable." His voice was perfectly bland as he said it, but he was still walking with the only person in the world that knew he was gay around a lake holding hands, so it might still qualify as the most romantic compliment he'd ever given.

He glanced at Koschei from the side and raised his eyebrows before snorting and shaking his head. "Remind me to warn your future girlfriend, just in case." Oh, he did see the smile and it freaked him out just a little and thrilled him in a way it really shouldn't, so he tried to ignore it as much as possible.

"Don't ever call me adorable," Koschei insisted, not liking it. It didn't hit the right note for him and it was the kind of crap his mother would say to him whenever he tried to do something rebellious or cool. The sad part of being a runty lad who didn't seem to age much was that people never quite take you seriously. And that was a sore point for Koschei.

Koschei looked at Barty for a moment in disbelief before bursting into mad happy laughter. What an idiot, did he really just say that? "Girlfriend? Fuck off, Barty. Do I look straight to you?"

And, to make his point, he swung their hands playfully. Seriously, it was kind of obvious. The clues were there.

"Not really," Barty admitted, "I only thought you were straight when I still found you kind of attractive. I'm a pessimist, see? Now you could be as gay as a barrel of monkeys." At least that was relatively... if not polite, at least roundabout enough to not really count as an insult.

Barty let go of Koschei's hand when he saw someone in the distance, not wanting to risk anything. There was a reason he put up with all of this, after all.

"You never lose attraction, you know? You have it forever. You can forget sometimes but you never truly stop seeing the beauty in something you appreciate," Koschei argued skilfully, looking entirely smug and casual. On the inside, he was burning. He hated being insulted, it tore him up inside. But he had self control, he wasn't an animal. He could play the waiting game if he had to.

With his hand free, he put it into his pocket and looked forward with a slight frown. "Why are you even scared of people knowing you're gay? -- Is it the kids at school or all on daddy?"

"I thought I liked your personality, genius. Given that that was before I really got to know you, sure, I still appreciate the beauty there, but it never existed in the first place, so." Barty wasn't being entirely truthful there, on any account, but he just shrugged and looked out at the lake.

"Just don't think it's anyone's business who I want to shag, unless they are the person I want to shag. Don't really fancy being beaten up over it though either, so, that's additional motivation."

"It's quite funny, actually. Because I seriously fucking hated you from the moment I met you," Koschei informed him, stopping by the lake and leaning over the rail to look for ducks. There had to be so somewhere, right? Maybe they were hiding from the cold. "I really did, I thought you were a boring and stupid little pawn who just piggybacked on others glory."

Grinning, he turned to Barty and playfully reached out, ruffling his hair in a mocking manner. "Then I got to know you and realised you're clearly a masochistic little fucker and that just turns me on. How else do you explain always provoking me like this? You know I'll get you back."

So either he was dumb or just got off on others punishing him.

"That's not really saying much. You hate everyone." Barty shook his head, not wanting him to touch his hair but knowing better than to tell him as much. "I'm not provoking you, just showing you where you can shove it the only way I know how to. But, sure, if it turns you on, feel free to pretend that I just love it when you punish me. Can't wait for the leather hood and penis gag, don't forget the whip."

He smirked and ruffled his own hair, as if that could undo Koschei's ruffling somehow. "You're projecting."

"I don't hate everyone. I just find them dull and uninteresting," Koschei reasoned as they continued to walk. The further along the lake they went, the more the protective gate started to disappear, leaving an open space for people to come down and feed the ducks. "You know that you need to shut up with me and yet you never do. I'd say you want this, you want to be punished. Or you're just very very stupid. Either way..."

And, with that, he suddenly launched and Barty and shoved him hard, trying to knock him into the lake. Bastard thought he could keep talking to Koschei like that? Well, he was wrong.

Barty had expected it, but a few moments too late to react. He ended up in the water after a rather disgraceful yelp, coming up to glare at Koschei. Fuck this, but point made, he supposed. He got out, dripping wet and shivering, although he definitely tried suppressing the latter, and stubbornly looked at the ground instead of at Koschei.

"Can we go inside somewhere?" He didn't actually want to catch pneumonia.

Koschei laughed happily, clapping his hands, unable to help it. He found Barty such a funny little guy, he was so mouthy yet so easily reigned in. Why did he even bother to mouth off if he couldn't take the punishment. "Did you see any ducks? I didn't see any! I thought I did but that was just you flailing about."

Grinning brightly, he happily trailed ahead, so pleased with himself. Koschei was not the sort of boy to piss off, one day Barty would learn that. "Inside? Where? You're set, we can't go into a cafe or anything. Can't go to your house, I'm better."

Barty glowered at Koschei and wrapped his arms around himself, wondering if it was cold enough to freeze. He'd find out soon, he supposed, if Koschei went through with this and after all the boy had already put him through he didn't exactly expect a sudden change of heart. That seemed about casually cruel enough to fit the bill.

He could just throw him into the lake, too, but for one thing he had his coat on and he didn't want to ruin it and for another... He'd rather not ruin his life, either.

"Then what do you want to do?" Because this had just turned from bearable to torture, really.

"I said I wanted to go to the park, we're in the park so lets have fun in it. Is that so hard?" Koschei asked his dripping wet companion, noting the shivers. He wasn't about to feel any pity for him, he'd started it and Koschei was happy to finish it. That was how it always worked for him. "It's easy to have fun at the park."

And, like that, he took the lead towards the play area. Not many people were out today, what with the awful weather and potential for rain, but nothing could stop Koschei from being painfully annoying.

Stealing a free swing, he took a seat and gestured to the one next to his. "Come on, have a swing!"

If only he could have gotten out of school before Koschei saw him, then this day could have been actually enjoyable. As it was Barty wondered if his lips were blue yet and sat down on the swing, moving as little as possible to try and build up some body heat at least.

Definitely not having any fun. But he did stay silent this time, pretty much a sullen response to Koschei telling him to shut it.

Koschei amused himself for a little while longer before he slept off the swings, huffing a sigh. Ever since he'd frozen Barty, he'd become such a dull sod. How was he meant to have fun if Barty refused to so much as make conversation. They could talk without mockery ... well, Barty could.

"I'm bored of you, go away," Koschei said simply as he started walking away from the other boy, purposefully leaving with the coat still on. It was a long walk back and he liked this coat. Maybe he'd just have it.

See, now that was good use. Seeing as he'd been dismissed, Barty immediately pulled his phone out, even if his hands felt numb, just to make sure it was still working. He didn't feel like much of anything but a hot shower and bed right now, but he'd just decided that he was determined to have fun with other people, just to spite Koschei.

Barty got up, still without a word - hey, he'd not change a winning method - and headed toward the exit of the play area while typing a message on his miraculously still working phone.

Koschei had no other friends to call, he had no one else to spend time with but Barty really. He didn't really manage to get the knack for friends. They required time, attention, some level of equality and manners. He didn't really get how to do any of that, not unless he was acting anyway.

That's why he went home alone, ready to find a way to destroy that smug prick and teach him a lesson about being so disappointing.
